Geoff’s main practice areas are Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, Disability Insurance, General Litigation and Class Actions (VIOXX and GM). His practice includes corporate, commercial, real estate, employment law, and wills and estates.
Geoff graduated from Memorial University with a joint honours degree in Political Science and Economics. He received the gold medal in Economics. In 1983 he received his law degree from Osgoode Hall, York University and became a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Geoff first practiced law with his father in Aylward, Morris & Pittman and continued to practice with the successor firms of Aylward, Chislett and now Aylward, Chislett & Whitten.
Geoff published the Newfoundland and Labrador Case Digest between 1993 and 2012. This series is a comprehensive digest of decisions of the Supreme Court. He was a member of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada, Civil Law Section which prepared a report for the ULCC on The National Class Action and Related Interjurisdictional Issues which reported in 2005. He had a bi-weekly column in the Telegram known as “Legal Notes” from 1992 to 1994 and was a contributor to the newsletters of the Canadian Bar Association (Provincial) and the Canadian Bar Association – National Civil Section. Geoff has presented papers and participated in panels on Insurance Law, Mechanics Liens, Wills and Estates and Legal Ethics. This fall he will be present two papers to the Canadian Bar Association (New Brunswick) on developments in evidence law.
Geoff has made numerous Court and Tribunal Appearances including: Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court: Trial Division and Court of Appeal and Provincial Court; Federal Court: Trial Division and Court of Appeal; Canada Pension Plan Appeal Board (Disability Pensions); Worker’s Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (Review Division).
Geoff and his spouse Elaine have three adult children, Stephen, Erin and Meaghan. Special interests include music, boating, photography, reading including extensive reading in the law. Geoff is a long-time member of Lions Clubs International and the Knights of Columbus and served as former member Provincial Advisory Board for the CNIB.
